THE SECOND GENERATION:

James Madison Gordon

Son of Robert GORDON and Sarah GORDON of Warren County Tennessee. Born during 1828 near McMinnville, Tennessee. Died November 28, 1892 in Gorin, Missouri, Scotland County. Married January 9, 1852 near McMinnville, Tennessee to Jane BYARS who was born February 22, 1835 near McMinnville, Tennessee and died in Maitland, Missouri on January 24, 1901 and was buried in Gorin, Missouri. J.M. Gordon and Jane (also sons William E. GORDON and Sturling GORDON) are all buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Gorin.

Jane's father was John BYARS and mother Mary (Polly) HOPPER. The HOPPERS were from Ireland originally. Mary HOPPER married secondly to a Mr. ROMJUE and died in Missouri. The BYARS family included Nathan, Polk, Harrel, Joe, Jane (GORDON) etc. - another sister in McMinnville married a TITTSWORTH and had around 14 children living about McMinnville in 1890.

After settling up their affairs in Tennessee they removed to Scotland County, Harrison Township, Missouri in the fall of 1859 settling on a farm near Memphis, Missouri - they were accompanied by several BYARS and brother David GORDON who later settled in Grapeland, Houston County, Texas. James Madison GORDON became an influential farmer and stock raiser in Scotland County. He, with others, organized the Round Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church located twelve miles south east of Memphis in 1859. He organized the Agricultural and Mechanical Association of the county and was their President in 1887. A member of the local bank and at one time alderman for the city of Memphis.

He was the first to establish the strain of Kentucky whip horses in that part of the country. One named Billie HALL, given to his son-in-law Dr. H. E. HALL of Maitland as a wedding present. He, in turn when leaving Missouri in 1904, sold this horse to a party who shipped them to Belgium, Europe and he won the Grand Prix in Antwerp about 1906.
